The EMF debate

The EMF debate
There is difference of opinion about what level of EMF (Electromagnetic field) is considered to be safe. Many governments and utility documents say that an acceptable level of a 60-Hz magnetic field to be 0.5 mG.

What does that mean in layman’s terms and how is EMF measured? – Gauss is a common unit of measurement of magnet field strength (Gauss meters are readily available and a valuable tool for those that want to really know how much they’re affected by EMF They are not expensive and Google search will provide you with lots of options).

A Gauss meter used for biological purposes should always be “frequency weighted”. This means that it will show a higher EMF reading than those meters typically used by electricians and engineers

Let’s have a look at the common measurement of some things that we use every day. A computer has 5-10 mG reading at 50cm (19.5 “) from the display – 10 to 20 times more than the acceptable limit! Electric clocks 5-10 mG up to 3 feet away. Fluorescent lights including energy saving bulbs 160-200 mG at I inch away. Electric razors and hair dryers 200-400 mG. It has been strongly recommended that hair dryers not be used on children because such high fields held close to a developing brain are highly dangerous. Microwaves are measured in milliwatt per centimeter squared (mW/cm2). This is probably too complicated for most of us, maybe it is sufficient to say that Russian studies show that all microwaves leak and normal microwave cooking converts food protein molecules into carcinogenic substances – a double whammy!

And so the debate about safety levels of EMF continues. The EPA has proposed a safety standard of 1mG. Sweden has set a maximum safety limit of 1 mG. Russian researchers claim that 1/1000th of mG should be standard. Dr Robert Becker who has been researching the effects of EMF for 20 years, states 1 mG safety limit in his book “Safety limits”.

Some governments are still sitting on the fence as regards EMF radiation, opinions differ. At the end of the day it is up to us as individual to make our own judgments and take the only SAFE option – protection.
